Industries that use 3D:
Gaming - 3D Game Artist
Perhaps the most popular industry to use it besides film. 3D in games is used to create worlds, assets and characters to an incredible amount of realistic fine detail in any type of fantasy world you can imagine. Or even as simple as you'd like. It means that the universe in the game can be aesthetically appealing and also make l0gical sense, and coherent functioning. It offers a full immersion experience, especially in VR, that is difficult to get in 2D games while still being able to optimise the level of CPU utilisation depending on the graphics and device. However, using 3D in games means high budget, a longer development time and higher GPU requirements to run the intensely taxing 3D gameplay which may slow/crash out older PC types.
A job in this industry could be a 3D game artist where you would work with creating 3D environment art. The necessary requirements are: extensive knowledge of real-world reference, proficiency at ZBrush, Max, Substance Suit and Photoshop and a portfolio showing expertise in 3D modelling, texturing and scene composition.
2. Architecture - 3D Building Artist
Nowadays in architecture, 3D modelling is used to create simulations of buildings and create intricate interactive maps for clients to view buildings and structures visually in a more precise way than through a 2D flat drawing blueprint. Clients can choose exactly what they want and make decisions faster by looking at the accurate floorplan of the 3D modelling. A liability may be that 3D modelling takes a long time to understand and render compared to a 2D drawing. A job in this field may be a 3D Building Artist where you build rooms, buildings and structures in a 3D view plan for your clients. The necessary requirements are: proficiency in for photorealistic rendering, output in AutoCAD, light and rendering experience and teamwork and communication skills with clients.
3. Advertisement - 3D Modeller
In advertisement, sometimes 3D is used instead of the actual product. This is due to the fact that companies can manipulate the lighting and background to their liking, making sure that they can create a product advert at anytime and not within a time constricted season and save money by not having to be 'on location' or using a real-life set. Using 3D can also make the product seem more appealing and tell a narrative that appeals to the audience by putting their products in their 'ideal states' while pushing a drive for demand even before production. A job in this field may be a 3D modeller/animator that creates advertisement for products. Necessary requirements may be:
interpret briefs efficiently and pitch ideas clearly to the client and design team, help conceptualise ideas and processes to come up with the best plan of action, strong artistic capabilities with colour theory, illustration, rendering and Maya, Zbrush, Adobe Suite etc.
